Understand transfer costs: exchange rates, fees and net payout

Distinguish the transfer amount, total payable and expected net payout, check the exchange-rate unit and confirm possible charges before approving a UR request.

Separate three amounts

The transfer amount is the basis of your request, total payable is what you must pay including agreed fees, and net payout is what the beneficiary is expected to receive in their currency. Ask for these figures separately. Compare quotes using the same origin, destination, amount, currency pair, delivery method and quote time.

Read the rate unit and direction

A bulletin may quote per dollar, per hundred dollars or another unit. Establish the unit and conversion direction before multiplying. If the quote is per hundred dollars, calculate the number of hundred-dollar units first. Do not automatically substitute a buying rate for a selling rate; ask which rate applies to your request.

An example with a separate fee

This is an educational example, not a UR price: a 1,000 dollar principal with a separate 10 dollar fee costs 1,010 dollars when the fee is added on top. If the fee is instead deducted from a fixed 1,000 dollar total, 990 dollars remain before any conversion or other deductions. Confirm which approach your actual quote uses.

Confirm validity and external deductions

Ask about payment or intermediary bank fees and whether they are included or potentially deducted outside the quote. The calculator and bulletin help with enquiries and do not reserve a rate. Obtain confirmation of the corridor, currency, expected net payout and quote validity before payment, and retain it with your receipt.
